Character.AI Down? How to Check and What to Do
Character.AI not loading or not replying? How to tell an outage from a problem on your side, the fixes worth trying, and where to keep chatting meanwhile.
You open Character.AI and the chat will not load, the reply spinner never stops, or the app logs you out. The first question is whether the service is down for everyone or only for you. The answer decides whether you should start fixing things or just wait.
Step 1: Check whether it is down for everyone
Do these quick checks before touching your settings.
Look at outage reports. Downdetector collects user reports for Character.AI and shows a spike when many people hit problems at once. Sites like StatusGator and IsDown track it too. When thousands of people report problems in the same hour, it is an outage. That has happened more than once this year: on June 15, 2026, for example, more than 3,000 users reported problems on Downdetector by late morning Pacific time (GV Wire).
Check Character.AI's own channels. The company posts on X as @character_ai, and the C.AI Help Center is the place for account problems.
Check the community. The Character.AI subreddit usually lights up within minutes of an outage. If the newest posts are all "is it down?", you have your answer.
If the reports are flat and nobody else is complaining, the problem is probably on your side.
Step 2: Fixes for "Character.AI is not working"
Work through these roughly in order. Most problems are solved by the first three.
Reload, then sign out and back in
A plain refresh fixes more than it should. If that does not work, sign out and sign back in. Expired sessions often show up as chats that will not load or messages that never send.
Try another browser or a private window
A private window starts without your extensions and saved site data. If Character.AI works there, the cause is in your normal browser: an extension (ad blockers and privacy tools are common culprits) or stale site data.
Clear the site's data
In your browser settings, clear cookies and cached data for character.ai only. You will need to sign in again afterwards. On the mobile app, clearing the app cache (Android) or reinstalling (iOS) does the same job.
Update the app
If you use the phone app, check for an update. An outdated version can stop working after the service changes behind it.
Check your connection
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or turn a VPN off and on. Some networks, such as school and work Wi-Fi, block AI chat sites entirely, which looks exactly like an outage from your side.
Look for a specific error
"Something went wrong", a waiting room, or a message that a character is unavailable each mean different things. A single character that will not load may have been removed or changed by its creator, while the rest of the site works fine. Search the exact error text along with "character.ai" to find others who hit the same thing.
Contact support
If nothing works and the site is up for everyone else, open a ticket through the Help Center. Include your device, browser or app version, and the exact error.
Step 3: What to do while you wait
If it is a real outage, there is nothing to fix. Usually it is a matter of waiting. A few options while you do:
- Write the next part of your scene offline. Draft your next few messages in a notes app so you can pick the story up the moment it is back.
- Save your character's details. If you have a character you care about, keep a copy of its definition and the key facts from your story somewhere of your own. It makes outages, and any other surprise, much less painful.
- Try another platform for the evening. Plenty of people use more than one AI chat site.
Keep roleplaying on Elyxia
If you want somewhere to chat right now, Elyxia works without an account. Open the character catalog, pick someone, and start typing. Guests get 7 messages, 2 images and 3 voice plays a day; a free account raises that to 30 messages, 3 images and 5 voice plays.
A few differences you will notice coming from Character.AI:
- Characters can send images in the chat, and you can have their replies read aloud.
- Characters remember things you tell them, and their affection and trust toward you change with how you treat them.
- NSFW is allowed on characters whose creator enabled it.
- There is no native app. Elyxia runs in the browser.
- The catalog is much smaller than Character.AI's.

FAQ
How do I know if Character.AI is down right now?
Check Downdetector or a similar outage tracker, Character.AI's X account, and the subreddit. A sudden spike in reports from many people means it is down; flat reports mean the problem is probably on your side.
Why does Character.AI work on my phone but not my computer?
Usually browser data or an extension. Try a private window. If it works there, clear the site's data or disable extensions one by one.
Will I lose my chats during an outage?
An outage usually means you cannot reach your chats for a while, not that they are deleted. If chats still look missing after the service comes back, sign out and in again, then contact support before assuming they are gone.
Is there a Character.AI alternative with no signup?
Yes. On Elyxia you can start chatting without an account. See our guide to AI roleplay with no sign up.
