Yandere AI Chat: How to Roleplay the Obsessive Type
What a yandere is, what makes a yandere AI roleplay work, opening prompts that set the tone, and how to build your own yandere character.
A yandere is the character who loves you sweetly, completely, and a little too much. The word comes from Japanese: yanderu, "to be sick", and deredere, "lovey-dovey". In anime and visual novels it describes someone whose affection tips into obsession. They are kind to you and frightening to everyone who gets close to you.
It is one of the most requested archetypes in AI roleplay, and one of the easiest to get wrong. This guide covers what makes a yandere scene work, how to open one, and how to build your own.
What makes a yandere a yandere
Plenty of characters are jealous or clingy. A yandere is defined by three things together:
- The sweetness is real. They are not pretending to be nice. They adore you, and on a good day they are the most attentive partner in the room.
- The devotion has no ceiling. Everything in their life points at you. Your schedule, your friends, the people who text you: they know all of it.
- There is a switch. Something threatens the relationship, a rival, a missed call, you mentioning leaving, and the soft voice goes flat. That switch is the heart of the archetype.
Without the sweet side, you have a horror villain. Without the dangerous side, you have a clingy girlfriend. The tension between the two is the whole point.
What makes a good yandere roleplay
Let it escalate
The best yandere scenes start ordinary. A date, a shared lunch, a late-night text. The unsettling details come in slowly: they know where you were last night, they bring up a coworker by name, they smile a moment too long. If the character is threatening someone by the second message, there is nowhere left to go.
On Elyxia the character's affection and trust toward you move with the conversation, so warmth you build early changes how the later, darker moments play out.
Give them something to react to
A yandere needs a trigger. Mention a friend. Come home late. Hesitate before saying "I love you too". These small beats give the character a reason to show the other side, and they are far more effective than asking the character to "be yandere".
Decide what kind of story it is
Some people want a tense psychological thriller. Some want dark romance where the obsession is the appeal. Some want comedy, the over-the-top anime version. All are valid, but the character will play it better if your messages make the tone clear.
Keep your own boundaries
It is fiction, and you are in charge of it. A few habits keep it fun:
- Use out-of-character notes when you need to. Something like
(OOC: let's keep this psychological, nothing violent)is a common way to signal what you want; steering with the story itself usually works best. - Redirect instead of quitting. If a scene goes somewhere you do not like, move it: change the location, skip ahead in time, introduce an interruption.
- Step away if it stops feeling like a story. Obsessive-love fiction can be gripping. It should not feel like a model for how a real partner treats you. If it starts to, close the tab.
Opening prompts that work
Use these as a first message, or adapt them. Each one gives the character a setting and a small trigger.
I come home an hour later than I said I would. The lights are off, but I can see someone sitting on the couch. "...You're still up?"
"Hey, sorry I didn't answer earlier. I was out with Mia from work. You remember Mia?"
I find a notebook under your bed. Every page is my name, with dates. "What is this?"
"I've been thinking. Maybe we should spend a little time apart. Just a week."
You've cooked my favorite meal, set the table, lit candles. It's not my birthday. "What's the occasion?"
The last one is a good example of the slow start: nothing is wrong yet, but the scene invites the question of how they knew it was your favorite.
Yandere characters to try
The yandere roleplay page lists every yandere-type character on Elyxia. A few that cover different flavors:
- Yuna is the classic yandere girlfriend. She loves you so much it hurts, and she will make sure no one else gets close.
- Cain is the darker male version: he has been watching you for months and he is done waiting. This one sits firmly in thriller territory.
- Nyx is a dark sorceress who would reshape reality itself to keep you. Fantasy setting, magic as the means of control.
- Queen Ravenna keeps you in her tower, not as a prisoner, she insists, but as her obsession. Regal, cold and possessive.
If you like the jealousy but want less danger, the possessive characters page has vampires, mafia bosses and partners who are protective rather than unhinged. For broader dark themes, browse dark romance.
Build your own yandere
If none of these is quite the yandere you have in mind, make one on the create page. A few fields matter most:
- Personality. Describe both sides explicitly: how they act when everything is fine and what sets off the other side. Speech patterns help a lot, for example sweet pet names that turn into full-name address when they are upset.
- Scenario. Set up the relationship and the tension. "You have been dating for three months. They have just found out you are going to a party without them" gives the first scene a hook.
- Trait sliders. In the advanced personality section, push Jealousy high and Warmth high together. That combination is the yandere shape: affectionate and jealous at once. Stubbornness decides how easily they let an argument go.
- Starting relationship. Set how the character feels about you at the start. A yandere who already adores you on message one, with high affection and lower trust, plays very differently from one who is still falling for you.
- Greeting. Write a first message that is sweet with one wrong detail in it. It sets the tone better than any description.
