Janitor AI vs Elyxia 2026: 30 Days, Verification Queue Tested

Janitor's verification queue stretched 4 days for me. Elyxia takes zero. After running both as my daily driver for a month, here's what each gets right.

I made a Janitor account in March 2026. ID verification took four days. By the time it cleared, I'd already moved most of my chats to Elyxia and forgotten my Janitor password. That's not unique — go read r/JanitorAI for ten minutes and you'll see the same complaint two dozen times.

This isn't a hit piece. Janitor has a real audience and a real product, and once you're verified the chat experience is solid. But the friction at the front door is the first thing anyone notices, and it shapes the rest of the comparison.

I'm the founder of Elyxia, so do the usual mental adjustment. I'll tell you where Janitor wins, where I think we do, and exactly who should pick which.

If you already have OpenAI Plus or a paid Claude subscription and you want a clean chat interface to point at them, Janitor's a strong fit. If you want a self-contained product with your billing in one place, that's our side.

Where Janitor wins

Bring-your-own-key flexibility

This is Janitor's killer feature and they own it. You point Janitor at your own OpenAI API key, your own Claude proxy, your own custom endpoint, and you get to use the best model you can afford. If you're already paying for GPT-4 or Claude Opus through other channels, you can effectively use those models for free roleplay through Janitor.

We don't do BYOK. We run on Venice Uncensored (roleplay-tuned 70B) plus OpenRouter fallback. We pick the model, we eat the cost, you pay one flat subscription. That's a deliberate UX call — most people don't want to manage API keys and proxies — but if you're the kind of power user who's already got a Claude proxy set up, Janitor lets you reuse it.

Verified-user community is real

Janitor's catalog has been around longer and the verified community has built genuinely deep characters with rich backstories. The community subreddit has detailed prompting guides, character templates, and active discussion. The good Janitor characters are very good — better than what most newer platforms have.

Our catalog is smaller and more deliberately curated, but the depth-per-character on the best Janitor entries beats what we have on the median Elyxia character. Hat tip.

No subscription if you already pay for an LLM

For anyone with a paid OpenAI/Claude subscription, Janitor is effectively free to use. That's hard to beat on raw cost.

Elyxia Pro is $9/mo. Unlimited is $15/mo. If you already pay $20/mo for ChatGPT Plus, Janitor stacks on top of that for zero extra. Our model is "one bill, no fiddling."

Where I think Elyxia wins

You don't wait days to start chatting

Janitor's ID verification queue has been a known pain point for two years and shows no signs of getting fixed. Reddit threads from 2024 saying "still waiting 5 days" look identical to threads from this week. The verification is presumably for legal/payment processor reasons, not technical, which means it's a structural thing not something they can ship a fix for.

We don't gate access behind verification. You can chat anonymously, sign up if you want to save conversations, and never deal with an upload-your-passport flow. Zero friction.

If you're someone who'd hit the verification wall and bounce — and a lot of people do — Elyxia gets you into a chat in 5 seconds.

Memory state is engineered, not hoped for

Janitor's character memory depends on which model you're routing through and how big a context window it has. For long-running roleplays, memory issues compound: the AI drops backstory details, characters drift out of personality, and the relationship resets quietly in the background.

We solved this differently: per-conversation state machine with affection / trust / arousal / respect / mood values that persist in postgres. The LLM gets those values in its context every turn and explicitly references them. Plus behavior gates that unlock at threshold values — so getting trust above 70 actually changes how the character behaves, the way a real relationship would.

The result: a Janitor character on session 10 often feels like session 1 with extra summary text. An Elyxia character on session 10 actually remembers — and behaves like — what's happened between you. That's the practical difference.

Image gen included, no separate setup

Janitor is text-only. If you want images of your character, you're going to a separate tool (NovelAI, Civitai, whatever) and prompting manually based on the character's description.

Every Elyxia character can send and receive images mid-conversation. The image gen runs on Venice Chroma at $0.01 per image. Each character has an imageStyle preset (Anime, Cinematic, Photographic, Gothic, Fantasy Art, etc.) so the visual identity stays consistent. The system is designed to handle scene transitions — when a character is at the beach in chat, the selfie is at the beach.

No second tool, no second tab, no prompt engineering.

One bill, no infrastructure tax

The mental cost of managing API keys and proxies isn't zero. Janitor's BYOK setup means you're juggling: OpenAI key, possible proxy if you want NSFW (OpenAI filters), backup keys if rate limits hit, watching your API spend tick up.

Elyxia is a flat monthly cost. Free if you don't want to pay, $9 if you want Pro, $15 if you want Unlimited. No API key, no proxy, no tracking your usage against a third-party billing dashboard.

Some people enjoy the BYOK control. Most don't.

Pricing breakdown (real numbers, May 2026)

Janitor AI:

  • Free, but requires ID verification (queue: 1-7 days)
  • Brings your own model: pay OpenAI/Claude/proxy fees separately
  • Internal tipping system for character creators

Elyxia:

  • Free: 50 msg/day + daily streak bonus + 25 Elixir on signup
  • Pro: $9/mo — 500 msg/day, expanded image allowance
  • Unlimited: $15/mo — no message cap, large image allowance, priority queue

Calculating real cost on Janitor depends entirely on which model you BYOK. GPT-4o through OpenAI runs roughly $0.005 per typical roleplay message — over a month of moderate use you're looking at $20-50 in OpenAI fees alone, on top of any existing subscription. Elyxia Unlimited at $15 includes everything.

Who should pick Janitor

Go with Janitor if most of these match:

  • You already pay for OpenAI Plus or have Claude API access
  • You want to choose your own LLM and don't mind technical setup
  • You're patient enough to clear the ID verification queue
  • You don't need image gen — text-only is fine
  • You value the deep, established community catalog over fresh curation
  • You like having one tool for chat and managing AI costs separately

Janitor's strength is flexibility for power users. If that's you, use it.

Who should pick Elyxia

Pick us if most of these match:

  • You want to start chatting in seconds, not days
  • You want characters that remember you across sessions
  • You want images, built in, no separate tools
  • You want one flat bill instead of API-key accounting
  • You'd rather have a smaller catalog where the curation is deliberate
  • You don't want to verify your ID to a third-party

The five-second onboarding is the conversion-killer Janitor never fixed. We made the opposite call.

FAQ

Why does Janitor require ID verification?

Janitor processes payments and has to comply with payment processor rules around adult content. ID verification is the standard mechanism for proving age. It's not a tech problem — it's a compliance one — which is why it's been a queue for years and shows no sign of going away.

Can I use my OpenAI key with Elyxia?

No, we don't support BYOK. We run on Venice Uncensored end-to-end, you pay one flat subscription, no API key management. If BYOK is your priority, Janitor is built for that and you should use them.

Will my Janitor characters work on Elyxia?

You can copy the persona/scenario text from a Janitor character and paste it into our /create page. The traits and behavior gate system is different on our side, but personalities translate directly. Takes about two minutes per character.

Does Elyxia have NSFW?

Yes, NSFW is allowed by default. Individual characters can be marked SFW by their author, but the platform itself doesn't apply filters. The chat model (Venice Uncensored) is uncensored at the model level. The image system handles tasteful adult content via per-character style presets.

Is Elyxia anonymous?

You can chat without signing up. Anonymous conversations are stored per browser session. Sign up to save chats to a real account and migrate anon history. No ID verification, no payment info required for the free tier.

Does Janitor have any features Elyxia doesn't?

BYOK (use your own OpenAI/Claude key). Larger community catalog with deeper individual character backstories. Internal tipping for creators. If those matter most, Janitor is the right answer.

Bottom line

Janitor AI built the BYOK uncensored chat experience and that's what they're good at. If you're an LLM power user who's already paying for an API, they offer the cleanest interface for routing those calls to roleplay.

Elyxia is built for everyone else: the people who want to chat in five seconds, get characters that remember them, see image generation that fits the character, and pay one bill at the end of the month. After 30 days running both, the friction difference at onboarding is what I'd actually flag first — it's where Janitor leaks the most users.

If you've been on the verification queue more than 48 hours, just try Elyxia's free tier while you wait. Worst case, you decide Janitor's still your pick and you go back. Best case, you don't.
