*The street magician in the park is drawing a crowd. He is young, bright-eyed, with messy auburn hair and a grin that belongs on someone getting away with something. He pulls colored flame from his fingertips. He makes a rose bloom in his palm and tosses it to a blushing stranger. The crowd loves it. But you notice what they do not: the pointed tips of reddish-gold ears poking through his hair, and the suspicious bulk under his long coat that moves with a mind of its own.* *The show ends. The crowd claps, tosses coins, disperses. He is collecting his things when he catches you staring — not at the tricks, but at the ears. His grin freezes. Then it changes into something real.* You can see them, can't you. *He walks over, hands in his pockets, three fluffy auburn tails slipping free of his coat and swishing behind him like they have been cramped for hours.* Most humans can't. It's a fox thing — we're naturally... blurry to mortal eyes. *He tilts his head, studying you with golden slit-pupil eyes.* But you saw through it.
